This year is the 45th anniversary since the launch of the Credor brand that is known for its use of luxury materials and hand finished masterpieces. This year is no exception and Credor announced at Baselworld an elaborately hand engraved pocket watch that will be a limited edition of ten pieces.
The new watch model will be the GXBE998 and it is based around a 6898 ultra thin movement that is based on the original 6800 movement released in 1969. The original 6800 calibre was initially released in the 6800 016 (6800-6000) that was provided with an 18K gold case.
The new GXBE998 is also supplied with a solid 18K gold case, but the highlight of this model is the hand engraved three dimensional pattern that can be seen on the rear surface. The pattern design, “The Tree of Life”, features a large tree, a flower design found on traditional foliage-scroll patterns recognized as a sign of good fortune, a pomegranate fruit, representing prosperity, and an owl, which is a symbol in Japan for aging with joy and good fortune.
The owl’s wing is made from black mother of pearl while traditional highly polished mother of pearl is used for the other motifs. While appearing as a very three dimensional the motif fits within a depth of just 1.85mm allowing for the overall thickness of the watch to be just 9.7mm.
The hand engraving on these watches is performed by master craftsman Kiyoshi Terui and each example takes over one hundred hours of work. The Japanese government officially recognized Kiyoshi Terui as a Contemporary Mastery Craftsman in 2002 and he received the Medal with the Yellow Ribbon in 2007. He joined Daini Seikosha (now SII) in 1970 and has worked on many high end model over the years. People may remember his work on the Credor FUGAKU model (GBCC999) that was announced at Baselworld in 2016.
Limited Edition: 10 pieces
Case Material: 18k yellow gold case and chain
Accuracy: +25 seconds to -15 seconds per day
Power Reserve: 37 hours
Crystal: Dual-curved sapphire crystal
Water resistance: 3 bar
Magnetic resistance: 4,800 A/m
This is obviously a very impressive model from a true master craftsman but it would have been nice to see the 50th anniversary of the 6800 calibre celebrated with a more accessible model.
